Ceramic Rings Pros and Cons
If you've never heard of ceramic rings before, this may seem like a bizarre choice. The first thing that most people think of when they hear the word "ceramic" they think of ceramic pottery and all those pottery classes where the ceramic would break so easily. Ceramic wedding rings are entirely different and are not made of the same material as ceramic pottery! Ceramic is a durable and sturdy material for rings, with a diverse assortment of styles and colors. Learn more about ceramic rings in the guide below.
What is Ceramic/Titanium Carbide?
To begin, let's explore what ceramic is in a little more depth. When talking about jewelry-grade ceramics, its technical name is titanium carbide.
Titanium carbide is a natural, organically occurring substance. Although it isn't a metal, this carbide is a sturdy substance that's highly resistant to heat. As such, it is used for heat guards in space shuttles. Manufacturers can heat it to extreme highs, forming the material we call ceramic.
In recent years, jewelers have found ways to create stylish and attractive jewelry with titanium carbide ceramic.
Benefits of Ceramic Rings
Ceramic rings cost significantly less than other materials. You can find a top-quality ceramic wedding ring for much cheaper than a gold, stainless steel, or platinum ring.
Ceramic rings also have surprising strength. They are highly resistant to heat but also to direct impact and scratching. If your job requires a great deal of physical labor, ceramic rings might be a practical choice.
Another benefit of these rings is that they're hypoallergenic. Many ring materials feature common allergens, such as nickel. Because they lack these allergen components, ceramic rings are excellent choices for people who get allergic reactions from certain metals.
Ceramic rings are great because they come in black ceramic as well as white ceramic. Black ceramic is your best choice for a black ring since it's one of the only non-plated black ring options. Black and white are both great colors that fit with any wardrobe.
Downsides of Ceramic Rings
While ceramic rings have many advantages, they also have a few disadvantages to consider. The worst inconvenience with these rings is that you can't resize them.
Most metal materials for rings are softer and more malleable, allowing jewelers to resize them with ease. However, ceramic is not a malleable material. As your fingers change size with age, you may find your ring no longer fits well.
Another disadvantage to these rings is their hardness. While it often works to the wearer's benefit, ceramic hardness has a few downsides. Its rigidity makes it more prone to shattering or breaking if you drop it. Albeit, the amount of force needed to shatter a ceramic ring is quite high.
The final downside to ceramic rings is that they don't work well for intricate designs. As mentioned before, other materials are more malleable than ceramic, making them easier to shape. Because ceramic is such a dense material, it's troublesome to craft designs for it.
How to Care for Ceramic Rings
Ceramic rings resist scratching and damage with ease but often attract stains since they come in a shiny black or white color. It is often said that black paint cars are the hardest to keep clean because black will show off dirt and blemishes easier. The same can be said for black ceramic rings. If you notice a blemish on your ceramic ring, don't worry! These rings are among the most low-maintenance on the market.
You can easily clean your ring with a damp cloth and mild detergent or soap. It may take a few minutes to remove marks. To check your progress, rinse the ring off to see if the spot is at all diminished. Keep working on it until the blemish vanishes for good.

Care write up by Patrick Adair
We send a simple to use collection vial that takes under a minute to fill and will use up a tiny fraction of available ashes (in most cases.)
If you are uncomfortable handling ashes (very understandable) you can ask a friend or your local funeral home if they will do this step for you and/or prepare little baggies with the proper amount to include along side the vial in the sample baggie. If you take this approach, just be sure to write your name and order number on the baggie and include with the empty vial.
We at Spirit Pieces believe that memorializing loved ones is best done as a family. Towards that end we offer discounts based on cart value, with higher discounts as the cart value increases.

We suggest a single person order and distribute the Spirit Pieces to keep everything as simple as possible.
You can order all the same item, or all different items, in terms of the discount as long as you exceed the discount threshold you'll receive the discount.
Please keep in mind that as we're an artist collective, our artists are in different locations so if multiple artists are ordered you may need send out multiple kits (read this note regarding). We cover the cost of sending you the collection kit, sending you the memorial, but not the cost of sending the kit back to us. We ask you send the collection kit(s) back priority express.

Common Family Ordering Questions:
If I order from different artists, does that affect the discount?
No, discounts are based on total cart value, so every item can be a different color/artist. As long as it's all in the same order you'll get the discount.
Do all my items need to be the same style/color
No, they can all be different
I want to send some items to different locations, how do I do this?
We offer free shipping as long as a single artist is sending to a single location. If you are working with different artist, each artist can ship to a different address, but all work from that artist needs to ship to that selected address.

Handling The Cremation Ash is Easy and Quick
- Takes no more than a minute.
- Collection Baggie seals securely.
If you are uncomfortable handling ashes (very understandable) you can ask a friend or your local funeral home if they will do this step for you and/or prepare little baggies with the proper amount to include in the sample baggie. If you take this approach, just be sure to write your name and order number on the baggie.
Ideally cremation ash should be shipped to us USPS Priority Express as per the postal service regulations on shipping cremains; we'll accept shipments if they arrive to us otherwise.
We do not cover the cost of shipping the kits back to us; if you're sending to multiple artists you have the option to send all kits to our Austin location. If you do this, please plan for an extra 1-2 weeks since we are grouping up orders and sending out the kits 1-2 times a month. You are of course welcome to send individual kits directly to the artist, just be aware that you'll need to pay for each kit. If you are only ordering from one kit, please send directly to the artist. Cost to send kits is approximately $30 to $55 based on your distance from artist.
If you are sending pet ashes (and only pet ashes) you can send via UPS or Fedex to our Austin office. This will cost ~$15.
The ash will appear as small light grey specks along with occasional bubbles. If there is extra ash left over we can either scatter locally or return the ash to you via priority express mail as per your instruction (additional costs will apply to cover the postage of returning ashes to you.)
Please keep in mind these are handmade just for you so there will be slight differences from piece to piece. Please note that if you order across styles you will be ordering from multiple artists so you may have to send out multiple kits.
All products can be infused with ash from both people and pets. We can combine ashes from multiple pets/people in one piece (mixing of ashes occurs on customer side.)
The kits are good for 18 months, there is no need to wait to have the ashes physically accessible before ordering the kit. We suggest having the kit ready for the ashes once they become available.
